Right-hemisphere drawing

Summer holidays are over, so the schedule of the Neighbourhood centre of the RC “Svetliy mir “O'Yunost...” brings back favourite creative activity – right-hemisphere drawing for the children over five years old.

The first meeting of the group took place on September 10. In one lesson, even those who do not know how to draw at all create fascinating work. A special technique, which allows revealing the artistic talent of each student, helps in this.

The technique of right-hemisphere drawing was proposed in the 1970s by the artist, teacher, and Doctor of Sciences Betty Edwards, who focused her studies on children. It was based on the theory of the Nobel Prize winner Roger Sperry that the hemispheres have a functional specialization. The left is responsible for logic and calculations, while the right – for creative thinking. The latter is activated by drawing with fingers or two hands, as well as by painting inverted images.

Right-hemisphere drawing is popular with children and adults. This is one of the many interesting activities from the Neighbourhood centre team that helps families spend more time together.
